"The Great and Near Great - A Century of Sports in Virginia" is a hard cover book by Abe Goldblatt and Robert Wentz dated 1976.  It is signed on the first page by both authors with a note.  There are 232 pages with photos throughout.  This book covers all sports with players who had ties to the state of Virginia.  What makes this book especially collectible is the front dust jacket photo of the Virginia Squires of the old American Basketball Association with Dr. J - Julius Erving.  Of course there is coverage of college sports teams like the University of Virginia Cavaliers, Virginia Tech Hokies, William & Mary, Virginia Union, Richmond, VCU, and others.  There are pages dedicated to football players Beattie Feathers, Frank Emanuel, Jim Breland, Leroy Keyes, Jake Scott, Walker Gillete, Steve DeLong among others.  There is coverage of Olympians, golfers like Sam Snead and Curtis Strange, Boxing, Tennis, Stock Car Racing, Baseball players and teams related to Virginia, there is even coverage of hockey in Virginia.
