Description
Very rare find! This is a large antique 6" diameter plain bell or single chime Crane or Powell steam whistle. It is valveless and is overall just over 19 inches tall and is indeed a full 6 inches in diameter. Weight is over 20 pounds. It has a 2 inch threaded inlet. It is made of brass and/or bronze. Though it is unmarked that I can see, it is indeed a Crane Company or Powell whistle. Crane and Powell were in cahoots for this particular design. The bell is very smooth, no dents or dings. The acorn nut and bowl are in excellent condition as well. I do notice that one of the spiders inside the bell is cracked (see photo), but that does not affect the operation of the whistle at all and could easily be brazed. I would suggest leaving it as-is, unless you plan to blow this one on very high pressure. Most 6 inch diameter whistles do not even have the spider in them anyway. Again, the bell itself is in excellent condition with no damage, dents, or dings.I did test this one using a separate 2 inch whistle valve and it works and sounds great, making a somewhat deep, mellow, haunting sound similar to a N
&
W Hooter.
Please look closely at the photos as this is exactly what you will be buying.
This antique steam whistle has a very nice patina.
Plain bell locomotive whistles such as this one are hard to find. With it being 6 inches in diameter, it is indeed the size found on most steam locomotives, but was used on other steam related equipment as well. It would be great for display in a railroadiana or maritime collection as a museum piece, or to use on a full size steam locomotive, factory, sawmill boiler, ship, tugboat, riverboat paddle wheeler, steamship, steamboat, steam traction engine or steam tractor, amusement park railroad train, etc.
